Grok includes a built-in dark mode. Here is how to turn it on — then see below for a more customizable alternative.
On desktop (grok.com)
Open Grok
Go to grok.com in your browser and sign in — the web app ships with a dark appearance by default.
Open Settings
Click your profile icon in the left sidebar and open Settings.
Choose your appearance
Under Appearance or Theme, select Dark or Light to override the default look.
On iPhone & Android
Open the Grok app settings
In the Grok app, tap your profile icon, then open Settings → Appearance.
Using Grok inside X
On x.com, Grok follows your X display setting: More → Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display and languages → Display → Dark.
Limitation: Grok's built-in theme options are limited to fixed palettes with no custom colors or automatic schedule. Turn Off the Lights lets you pick your own dark colors and automate switching on Grok and every other site.

Why Turn Off the Lights
The Most Complete Grok Dark Mode Solution Available
While Grok does offer a built-in dark mode, many users searching for Grok dark mode want more control — custom colors, automatic scheduling, and a consistent dark experience that extends beyond Grok to every other website.
Grok Dark Mode with Custom Colors
Grok's built-in dark mode uses a fixed dark palette. Turn Off the Lights lets you choose your own background color — pure black for OLED, warm dark for eye comfort, or any shade you prefer. Apply the same custom theme consistently across Grok and all other sites.
The Three-Palette Method for Grok
Most users settle on one of three proven starting palettes: True Black for OLED battery savings, Warm Dark for late-night reading comfort, or Slate Grey for balanced daytime contrast. Pick the preset closest to your preference in the Night Mode options, then fine-tune background, text, and link colors independently. It is a faster path to your ideal Grok dark mode than adjusting every slider from scratch.
Automatic Grok Dark Mode Scheduling
Grok's built-in dark mode requires manual toggling. Turn Off the Lights lets you set sunrise/sunset switching or custom hours, so your dark theme turns on and off automatically across Grok and every other site.
One Extension, Dark Mode Everywhere
Grok is just one website. Turn Off the Lights applies the same Night Mode theme to every website you visit — Grok, X, news sites, Reddit, and beyond — giving you a unified dark experience across your entire browser.
Open Source, Private, and Free — Always
Turn Off the Lights collects no personal data, displays no advertising, and charges nothing. The extension is fully open-source under the GNU General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2), with its complete source code available on GitHub for anyone to inspect. It has been in continuous development since 2009 and remains one of the most trusted browser extensions available, with millions of active users across all major browsers. Stefan Van Damme is the solo developer and has maintained the extension with monthly updates for over 15 years.
