Game Controller Support for Web Videos

Use your Xbox, PlayStation, or USB gamepad to control videos in your browser

Lean back and put the keyboard away. With Game Controller support in the free Turn Off the Lights browser extension, your gamepad becomes a remote control for web videos. Control the video playback on YouTube and other websites directly from your Xbox, PlayStation, or USB controller, without leaving the couch.

How it works

The feature uses the Gamepad API built into modern web browsers, the same standard that browser games use to talk to controllers. Connect your gamepad by USB or Bluetooth, press any button so the browser detects it, and Turn Off the Lights maps the controller buttons to video control on the page. No extra drivers, plugins, or companion apps are needed.

Works with the controllers you already own

Because the Gamepad API is a web standard, most controllers work out of the box: Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and generic USB or Bluetooth gamepads. If the browser can see the controller, Turn Off the Lights can use it.

Test your connection first

Not sure if your controller is detected? Open the Game Controller test page: it instantly shows whether your gamepad is ready and connected, so you can verify everything before you start watching.

How to control videos with a game controller

  1. Install the free Turn Off the Lights extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Safari, or your favorite browser.
  2. Connect your game controller with USB or Bluetooth, and press any button so the browser detects it.
  3. Open the test page to confirm the connection, then use the controller buttons to control video playback on any website.
