Everything the Dark Mode Scheduler Can Do
Set it once and forget it — dark mode follows your schedule, not the other way around.
Time-Based Schedule
Choose exact times to turn Night Mode on and off — for example, on at 8 PM and off at 7 AM, every day automatically.
Works While You Browse
The schedule applies live — pages switch to your dark theme at the set time even if they're already open.
Every Website at Once
One schedule covers every site. No per-site settings to manage unless you want them.
Your Own Dark Colors
The scheduled theme uses your custom background, text, and link colors — not a fixed grey.
All Major Browsers
Scheduling works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and Opera — one install, same behavior everywhere.
Fully Private
Schedules are stored locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server — ever.
Why Schedule Dark Mode?
Dark mode is most valuable at night — but remembering to toggle it every evening (and off again in the morning) gets old fast. A schedule makes dark mode automatic: bright pages during the day, dark pages when the light outside drops.
How the Night Mode Schedule Works
In Turn Off the Lights Options → Night Mode, enable the timer option and set your on/off times. From then on, Night Mode activates and deactivates itself — no clicks needed. Combine it with your custom colors and the transition happens silently in the background.
Pair It With System Dark Mode
If your operating system already switches between light and dark, you can keep them aligned by matching the schedule to your OS sunset times — or let the extension follow your system theme directly.
Open Source, Private, and Free — Always
Turn Off the Lights collects no personal data, displays no advertising, and charges nothing. The extension is fully open-source under the GNU General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2), with its complete source code available on GitHub for anyone to inspect. It has been in continuous development since 2009 and remains one of the most trusted browser extensions available, with millions of active users across all major browsers. Stefan Van Damme is the solo developer and has maintained the extension with monthly updates for over 15 years.
